What is naturopathic medicine?

Naturopathic medicine is a system of medicine that uses natural and holistic approaches to support and stimulate the body’s self-healing processes. Naturopathic doctors focus on getting to the root cause of illness, (instead of just treating symptoms), treating the whole body and on the prevention of disease. Naturopathic medicine is a combination of traditional healing practices with modern, evidence-based treatments.

How are naturopathic doctors trained?

Naturopathic doctors must have an undergraduate degree before completing a four-year training program at an accredited naturopathic medical school. They study clinical and biomedical sciences, diagnostic techniques, and naturopathic treatment modalities. NDs must pass licensing examinations and are required to complete continuing education on an ongoing basis to maintain their license.

How is naturopathic medicine regulated?

Naturopathic doctors are regulated by the College of Naturopaths of Ontario (CONO) and are part of the regulated health professions of Ontario. In Canada, similar to the other healthcare professions, each province or territory defines the scope of practice for NDs.

Homeopath vs. naturopath, is there a difference?

Yes. Homeopaths specialize in homeopathy, which is a specific system of alternative, energetic medicine. Naturopaths, on the other hand, practice naturopathic medicine, which is a comprehensive approach to healthcare that includes various natural therapies and functional lab testing, and can include homeopathy. Naturopaths have a much broader scope of practice than homeopaths.

Can naturopathic medicine treatments be used in conjunction with medications?

Absolutely. Naturopathic doctors are trained to ensure treatment is safe for use alongside conventional treatments and therapies.

What can I expect from the first visit?

Prepare for a 75 minute conversation where we delve deep into the reasons for your visit, your health history and goals of treatment. This is a lengthy appointment to allow us to explore the different systems of the body, aspects of lifestyle and order lab work to investigate the root cause.

How long does it take to see results?

This is determined on a case-by-case basis. Every person and situation is different and results vary based on adherence to treatment. The best way to get more information is to book in for a complimentary consultation.

What is integrative medicine?

Integrative medicine is the collaboration of conventional and naturopathic medicine. Naturopathic doctors and medical doctors offer distinct approaches and treatment options, combining the strengths of both forms of medicine is the optimal form of healthcare.

Are your services covered by OHIP?

OHIP does not currently include coverage for naturopathic services but many extended health care plans do offer full or partial coverage. Contact your insurance provider for more information. It is important to note that while naturopathic doctors have the ability to request blood work, this service is not covered by OHIP.

Do we do direct billing for extended insurance?

Yes! We provide direct-billing for a majority of insurance plans.
